A new kind of child neglect is emerging as federal and state leaders move to roll back child care regulations, weaken Child Protective Services, and remove “neglected children” from CPS investigations. These changes come at a time when millions of children are already reported abused or neglected each year, and when poverty, trauma, and unmet basic needs are widespread.
“We’re going to barbecue a lot of sacred cows,” Alex Adams, head of DHS speaking about medical care and nutrition standards for Head Start children and reducing a multitude of other child friendly programs.
It would be different if the numbers of at-risk children and families weren’t so big before these attacks began. 7.8 million children reported abused and neglected annually, high numbers of child poverty and many other unhappy statistics indicating we already leave too many of America’s youngest citizens without the basic necessities to live a productive life.
Conflicted, cruel, and confusing language about child protection is having a terrible impact on the quality of life for millions of America’s abused and neglected children, families, and the communities they live in.
Attacks on Child Protective Services (CPS) and sweeping claims about creating a “bonfire of deregulation” and reducing services and protections for at-risk children and families will harm children.
Efforts to eliminate “neglected children” from CPS investigations are gaining traction. It will become apparent very quickly how many more children will suffer egregious harm and death as states deregulate and eliminate neglected children from CPS. It’s already happening.
