John Jay documented 10,667 victims of priest abuse in the United States between 1950 and 2002.
Roughly 200 children a year.
In one year, 532,228 American children were confirmed abused or neglected by their own caregivers.
3.6 million were the subject of a screened-in report. Something near 16 million are living in households somebody called the state about.
That is more than 2,500 to 1, documented against documented
The real gap is wider.
The clergy number has been hunted for twenty years with grand juries, lookback windows, bankruptcy claim periods, published lists of credibly accused priests, and lawyers advertising for survivors.
Nothing like that exists for the child abused at home. No lookback window. No claims process. No institution with assets. No lawyer looking for the forty-year-old whose stepfather beat or raped them.
There is a hotline call made while the child is still a child, and half of those calls are screened out before anyone knocks on the door.
The difference between these two populations was never the injury. It was who went looking.
