Flint’s Rx Kids program invested $14 million to support 2,240 babies and their families with no‑strings‑attached cash—roughly $6,250 per child over pregnancy and the first year of life. Families spent the monthly $500 stipends on rent, utilities, food, diapers, transportation, and medical care: the basics that keep babies safe and housed.
Compare that to what it costs when poverty drives families into child protective services.
CDC‑linked economic studies estimate that the lifetime cost of a single child maltreatment case in the United States is on the order of $830,000 per victim, once you add up child welfare, health care, special education, criminal justice, and lost productivity. When foster care is involved, public‑sector spending alone often runs $41,000 or more per child per year and can be far higher for intensive placements and services.
If even a small fraction of those 2,240 Flint infants would otherwise end up in CPS or foster care primarily because of poverty—missed rent, no food, no transport to appointments—the math is stark. A $14 million cash investment that stabilizes families in the most vulnerable months of a child’s life can easily avert tens or hundreds of millions of dollars in downstream system costs, not to mention the human cost of trauma, removals, and broken attachments.
Tell your State Representative (find them here) that you are tired of paying ever‑rising CPS, foster care, crime, and justice bills (taxes), and that you would rather buy breathing room for parents, safety and stability for babies, and a real chance to prevent maltreatment before it starts.
