Invisible children in global armed conflicts face flagrant violations of their right to life, safety and protection. Violence is inflicted directly on children and/or children face emotional and mental trauma from being ripped apart from their families, homes and chance at a prosperous future. Despite awareness of this, there is a lack of political will to take action. The following news articles details the how the world is failing to protect children in times of armed global conflicts and steps taken by some to remedy the situation.
World – “World is failing to protect children from the horrors of war”.
UN News
In June 2025 the UN Security Council held an Open Debate in Guyana with the theme of effective strategies to end and prevent grave violations against children. The UNICEF Director of Child Protection addressed the state of the Armed Conflict Agenda and how armed conflict has and is affecting the peace and security of children.
The Director states that the real number of cases where children are recruited, abducted or raped is far higher than the number of verified cases. This is stated to be a moral failure and a matter of human decency, not just a breakdown of basic legal protections.
Two trends are identified. One, the increased use of explosive weapons in populated areas which do not just harm children in the moment of impact but destroys the infrastructure and foundations of childhood. Two, the surge in sexual violence which lead to physical injuries, trauma and further abuse. Despite horrific and disturbing statistics, the Director states that they are seeing important progress in the Armed conflict agenda.
It is stated that where there is a political will, progress is possible. The Director calls on the Security Council and Member States to take urgent action to not only respect international humanitarian law, but to ensure that others do so as well.

World – “we are at a point of no return”: Grave violations against children surge for third year.
UN News
The 2024 UN Secretary General’s annual report notes from 2023 to 2024 a 25% increase in the number of grave violations against children. It is noted that this percentage includes cases which could be independently verified, meaning that the actual number of grave violations is likely much higher. It is also noted that this is the third consecutive year in which grave violations have increased. The report attributed the increase to indiscriminate attacks, discarded for peace agreements and the deepening worldwide humanitarian crises. The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General stated that governments and armed groups around the world blatantly ignore international law and are the main forces responsible. The Special Representative states that the increase in grave violations should be a wake up call to act with urgency and determination to bring this suffering to an end, not to tomorrow or someday but today. https://news.un.org/en/story/2025/06/1164646
World – EU Consults Children from Conflict Zones on the Impact of War on Their Lives and Human Rights.
European Union External Action
23 Children from 10 countries participated in a discussion with EU members, providing input on the drafting of a resolution on the rights of the child. Several children recounted violations of the right to life, safety and protection, stating that there is no justification for killing children. The children described how children had been raped, were living in fear of bombs and shelling, and how children lost a chance at a future with no means to education and learning. The children also described instances of recruitment for child soldiers. This opportunity enabled the voices of children to be heard and allowed meaningful participation in decision making.
World – UNICEF calls for urgent investment in life-saving services for children as global humanitarian needs reach new extremes.
UNICEF
UNICEF launches their Humanitarian Action for Children 2026, stating that US$7.66 billion is urgently needed to provide life-saving assistance to 73 million children across every region facing emergencies. In many instances children in conflict zones are facing overlapping emergencies which UNICEF states are growing in scale and complexity. Funding shortfalls and cuts by donor governments are limiting UNICEF’s already strained funds, forcing the organization to make impossible decisions in disbursing aid and decreasing frequency of humanitarian services. UNICEF warns that more than 200 million children will require humanitarian assistance in 2026.
Palestine – Gaza: UN humanitarians flag impact on children of return to war.
UN News
This UN article details how hundreds of children are being killed and severely injured in Gaza and how severe hunger and malnutrition is rapidly increasing as food stocks dwindle and aid is prevented from reaching the people of Gaza. The targeting of health workers, aid workers and fleeing civilians makes meeting the humanitarian needs increasingly challenging, as illustrated by the fact that there are fewer than 500 units of blood available, when 8000 are needed every month.

Chad – How war affects children: Encounters in Chad.
UNICEF
Journalist Patricia Tomamichel recounts her experience traveling with UNICEF to refugee camps in Chad. Speaking with children directly affected and displaced by war, she explains that even though children and their families may be physically safe, the conditions and circumstances in refugee camps are lacking basic necessities of life. Children also are left with the emotion and mental trauma of seeing family members being killed and having to flee violence with no guarantee of safety or of returning home. She notes that some refugee camps were intended to be temporary and transitory, but because of the number of people coming to the camp, thousands are still stuck there.

KARA note: Christian chivalric ideals of the 1200’s urged warriors and knights to defend the weak and innocent, from the ravages of battle. We are a long way from that today.
