Sexual abuse of a child is rarely a single “incident” or the act of a stranger in the dark; for many children, it is years of rape by the caregivers who are supposed to protect them. Most child sex abuse occurs in the home. This CASA Guardian ad Litem has experience two four-year-olds coming into CPS at eight years old (from different families) after four years of repeated rape and many others between five and ten years of age.
Child rape is not just a terrible memory; it is a full‑body, brain‑deep injury that reshapes how a child develops. Chronic terror, betrayal, and sexualized violence repeatedly flood a child’s brain with stress hormones, disrupting the normal wiring of areas responsible for emotion regulation, memory, trust, and even physical health. Without sustained, informed support from caregivers, schools, health systems, and the wider community, the child’s brain adapts to survive in a world that feels permanently unsafe: hyper‑vigilance, dissociation, depression, self‑harm, addiction, and difficulty with relationships can persist well into adulthood. These changes don’t simply fade with time; they tend to harden when the abuse is met with silence, disbelief, or blame instead of protection, therapy, and consistent, safe relationships—turning what was done to the child into a lifetime sentence unless the community intervenes.
Think about it, young children don’t even know forced sex is wrong
only that it’s painful and terrifying.
Poor working moms without money for daycare are forced to leave their children with dodgy uncles and husbands and boyfriends while they work. Many parents, relatives, or other trusted adults inside the home come from years of childhood sex abuse themselves making it likely they will pass it on. Epigenetics is real – just like hair and eye color.
The abuse often begins when they are very young and continues in secrecy through childhood and adolescence, repeated over and over while the child eats at the same table, sleeps under the same roof, and depends on the perpetrator for survival. This is not just violence; it is a long-term captivity that rewrites a child’s sense of safety, love, and self.
If child sex abuse makes you angry, we are doing our job. The next step is to turn that anger into action — by contacting your state legislators, sharing this data with people who hold power, and refusing to accept a system where five children die every day and thousands more suffer egregious life changing harm.
