Thank you Safe Passage For Children for a clear headed view of a painful topic. Abolishing County Child Protection would eliminate the rights of children to the most basic human right of a safe home.
Eliminating CPS would spell doom for at risk children.
Yes, Child Protective Services struggle to keep children safe. Yes, there is trauma in the process and getting it right demands the resources, training and staffing necessary to get it right. Often, there is no “right” – there is only “a safer answer”.
Childhood trauma lasts forever. As it is, many abused and neglected children are stuck in toxic homes with no path to safety. The COVID pandemic has locked many more children into these homes with no access to mandated reporters made available through the school system.
U.S. school enrollment from 2019 to 2020 has dropped by 2.9 million – many of them children that need mandated reporters to help them find safety.
This is a sign that more help for at risk children and families will be needed – not less.
It’s easier to kick down a barn than it is to build one.
