Trauma is a biological reality. Brains and behaviors develop differently because of trauma. The impact of trauma lasts forever.

What happened to your parents and grandparents lives in your genes and behaviors – you will pass those genes and behaviors on to your children through genetic expression. That’s how nature works.

Generations later, grand children and great great grandchildren of African American Slaves today live with the genetics and behaviors passed down to them from people living in constant terror of being sold, beaten or raped or having their children & spouses being sold, beaten, raped.

Most Black folks are not aware of how this affects them today, but it lives in them and is an unconscious part of their being.

Trauma is the same whether watching your siblings or mother being beaten or raped or being beaten or raped. Trauma lasts more than one lifetime.

Terrible trauma (like generations of slavery) and the behaviors and conflicts it creates need to be identified and discussed if they are to be fixed. Do we want higher graduation rates and lower crime and recidivism rates for our at risk youth and families?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the Children’s Hospital Association have joined forces to declare a national emergency in children’s mental health, largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Today’s declaration is an urgent call to policymakers at all levels of government — we must treat this mental health crisis like the emergency it is,” said AAP President Lee Savio Beers, MD, in a statement.2 in 5 LGBTQ youth in the U.S. “seriously considered” suicide in the past year. The COVID lockdown, mean politics and cruel media (Dave Chappelle) are making life miserable a great many at risk children and young adults.

For those of us that live with, work with or love troubled youth, life is getting more complicated.
