From Safe Passage for Children of Minnesota today; This Peabody Award Winning video documents the critical issues that lead to the gruesome murder of 6 year old Eli Hart and dangers facing all of Minnesota’s abused and neglected children.
KARA’s observations about this; Hundreds of children have died while known to Child Protective Services. Some have been tortured over time. Many more children have suffered years of trauma as the institution standards and practices come a long way over the last few decades, but never able to meet the needs of these children.
There are no metrics or reporting made available about children’s suffering
at the hands of their caregivers or
the self-harm or suicide attempts of traumatized kids in the system.
This former CASA Community volunteer Guardian ad Litem has been on multiple suicide calls with children as young as four years old. There is nothing sadder that being in a hospital suicide ward with a four year old.
Would anything change if the public (or State Legislators) knew their stories or the data reflecting the conditions these poor children live in?
What’s tracked and measured can be addressed and made better. Anything else is arguably benign neglect (or worse).
