November is National Adoption Month

One out of 25 U.S. families have an adopted child. About 5 million Americans alive today are adoptees.

Adoption Network said, “[there are] over 400,000 children in foster care in the U.S., [and] 114,556 cannot be returned to their families and are waiting to be adopted.

Half of the 135,000 adoptions are from the foster care system.  The median age of children entering foster care during FFY 2019 was. 6.3 years.

Nationwide, Black children are significantly overrepresented in foster care. They make up about a quarter of the foster care population but just 14 percent of children in the general population. In New York City, as of the end of 2019, Black and Latinx youth made up about 90 percent of the youth in foster care.

There are 438,000 children in foster care in America today & in 2016, 687,000 children spent time in foster care.  37% of American children are reported to child protection services by their 18th birthday.
