If you read this blog, you know how hard it is for Minnesota’s abused and neglected children to find the help they need to thrive or simply to escape their abusers.
The Safe Passage Report on Child Maltreatment Deaths is a remarkable report – not in a good way. It demonstrates how common it is for Minnesota children to die from abuse in the home even after they have become known to CPS. This report is still only the the tip of the horrors facing abused children as;
- DHS did not cooperate with the investigator,
- Four counties did not respond,
- Child deaths reported were only those that had court filings or had been reported in the media
These sad facts are still just the tip of the child terror iceberg as none of the children with near death experiences and years of terror and trauma are ever known outside the family (or in this report). Please respond to Safe Passage’s request (below) to educate elected officials that will make children of MN safe;

In response to the Safe Passage report on Minnesota child fatalities we were recently interviewed for the American Enterprise Institute’s “Are You Kidding Me?” podcast, featured in this Child Welfare Monitor, and invited to present our findings to a Washington policy group and a national child welfare conference. But here at home we can’t get a House or Senate sponsor for our legislation, and media coverage has been limited to this Star Tribune column and this KSTP report. We need you to join us at the legislature on Wednesday March 22nd to educate elected officials about the need for legislation to protect children. If March 22nd doesn’t work for you we will schedule meetings with your Representative and Senator at your convenience. Let’s take advantage of this national spotlight to build momentum for new child safety legislation. |
